A: When it is a ‘pre-registration’, or a car that Dealers and Manufacturers have just taxed to count as a registration to artificially boost their Market Share. The practice is rife, although they’ll deny it, but, when retail demand is down, the cars still keep coming off the production lines in France, Germany, Spain, Slovakia, Sunderland, wherever… and can’t be stopped, so the current stock has to be got rid of. So they are registered in the Dealer’s or Manufacturer’s name and left in their storage compounds until sold.

Q: How do we know?

A leading dealer group boss has warned of mounting pressures on dealers to pre-register cars in order to reach sales targets.
Vertu Motors chief executive Robert Forrester said pre-registrations were on the increase in a shrinking ‘post-scrappage’ market. “In the past six months there has certainly been more [pre-registrations] than in the previous 18 months.”
“The new car market has dropped off post-scrappage. There is more pressure, potentially, for Dealers to hit target.”

Q: What does this mean?

A: Quite simply, there will be plenty of 60-plate, registered but unused cars coming onto the market over the next few weeks. This will give you a great opportunity to get that new car you were looking at for a MUCH LOWER PRICE than the Manufacturer’s List Price when ‘new’.

So, if you are thinking about ordering a Brand New car in the next few weeks, think again, because a pre-registered bargain from The Nearly New Car Company might be right up your street!

To highlight the potential costs to new car buyers, the report found depreciation on some family-friendly models, such as a Vauxhall Zafira 1.6i, ran to an astonishing £56 per day, or £1.72 a mile, over the first six months / 6,000 miles.

Some of the biggest losses to depreciation occur in the luxury car market. For example, an Audi A8 4.2 TDI Quattro SE has an anticipated depreciation rate of £185 a day over its first six months, or more than 50% of the car’s value.

The 4×4 sector shows more stable demand – and slower depreciation – with off-road models such as the Land Rover Discovery, Hyundai Santa Fe and Honda CRV all expected to retain about 80% of their value.

Unsurprisingly, the economical supermini category produced some of the slowest value-losers, with a Mini First 1.6 expected to retain about 85% of its sale price – a manageable £10.05 daily depreciation over the first six months.
So, the facts are clear – a New Car is an expensive choice. And that’s not just the original purchase price; the whole-life costs can be enormous. But there is an alternative: Nearly New.

The report says that some Dealers are warning customers that they may have to wait SIX MONTHS OR MORE for delivery of premium models, which means they are running the risk of hitting the higher rate of VAT when it is introduced.
An Audi spokesperson said customers ordering now will wait typically until the first quarter of 2011 for all model ranges apart from the A4.
During the recession, manufacturers scaled back production and inventories have fallen significantly.
A spokesman for Mercedes Benz said “stock levels around the network are pretty low”.

So, the choice is yours:

A Brand New Car next year for a lot of money and with an extra 2.5% VAT on top…

Or a Nearly New Car right now for a lot less money!

Hmm. Let me think…..

Registrations rose 19.9 per cent in the first half, but are set to drop back by year end, according to Industry forecasts.

Some analysis of the figures shows an interesting picture:
The fleet market rose in June, up 25.3 per cent while sales to small businesses with fewer than 25 cars rose 18.4 per cent. However, private demand fell 3.3 per cent.

But over the first half of the year private demand has shown the largest rise, up 24.6 per cent, boosted by the Scrappage scheme. The scheme closed to new orders in March. Companies which reaped the benefit of Scrappage found the going tough in June. Kia registrations were down 15.7 per cent for the month and Hyundai fell 21.4 per cent.

There will always be a steady stream of genuine registrations to Leasing and Contract Hire companies. But if these supposedly fairly constant registrations are up by a whopping 25% when retail demand is going the other way, we must raise an eyebrow or two and see if there’s an opportunity on the horizon.

At this point it must be stressed that, despite what the manufacturer’s PR departments say, there is invariably a difference between a New Car Registration and a New Car Sale.

Not all New cars that are registered have an end user ready to drive away – fact.

A large number of registrations, particularly at the end of a month, are ‘tactical’ eg Dealer Demonstrators, Service Dept Loan vehicles, Rental Fleet renewals and good old-fashioned Pre-Registrations. It happens. Fact.

How do we know?

Because we get offered delivery-mileage, registered cars on a regular basis. They can’t all be ‘cancelled Fleet orders’ or ‘wrong spec – ordered in error’, but one man’s loss is another man’s gain. Most of the manufacturers represented in the UK have their cars built abroad and imported. If demand suddenly drops – as seems to be the case right now – the supply tap cannot just be ‘turned off’. The flow of cars keeps on coming, and the UK Sales Departments of the car makers have to get the metal moving. Quickly. Because there’s another boatload on its way and they all have to be paid for.

New car prices have been rocketing up over the last couple of years and now the manufacturers have realised that their insatiable greed has gone too far and now their cars are, quite frankly, just too dear. In fact, some of them are now backtracking rapidly and reducing List Prices to try and stimulate some interest.

The usual range of Consumer Incentives will be rolled out – 0% finance, Cashbacks, free spec upgrades etc etc. But if the good old British Public ain’t buying, they ain’t buying. It doesn’t matter how many ‘freebies’ are thrown into the deal.

Therefore, (and here’s the ad) we think there will be a significant number of Very Nearly New Cars hitting the market in the next few weeks, and you can be sure we’ll be at the front of the line if there is.

And they’re nearly always great value when compared with the List Price of an identical New vehicle and if it’s your own money you’re spending and you need a new (or New-ish) car and you’re looking for a bargain, you know where to come…
